Is God Calling You to Write?

Have you ever felt compelled to start writing for the Lord but didn’t know what you would say? If so, this message is written primarily for you.

When I was a young doctoral student, I had to prepare a presentation for my first international conference. I was terrified.

As I began to write out my notes, I asked one of my doctoral professors how I should compose such a critical outline. He said, “Just barf on the page. We’ll clean it up later.” Hmmm...not a pleasant image, but effective!

Then as I prepared for the actual presentation, I asked another trusted mentor, “What will I say since they all know more than me?” He smiled and said, “Relax...just talk about what you already know.”

They were right. My old mentors knew how to trust a process that works.

As you consider what to write for the Lord, I encourage you to trust a similar process with Christian writing. Just barf on the page...God will clean it up... doesn’t He always clean up our mistakes?

Next, talk about what you already know...in your mind, heart, and spirit, that is uniquely you.

You will begin to let go of your ego as you write or speak. You are not competing against anyone; you are writing to bless others, encourage them, and inspire them in a way that only YOU can.

If you don’t trust me, you can always trust God. He said,

“...do not worry about how or what you are to say; for it will be given to you in that hour what you are to say. For it is not you who speak, but it is the Spirit of the Father who speaks in you.” Matthew 10:19-20 (NISB)

If you are interested in how I got the call from God to start writing, see this post "Writing For--and About--God? (2007). In addition, I started writing because God knew I was a lukewarm Christian.

Are you ready to start writing for our Lord? Remember, Christian writing can be integrated into the 5 areas of Biblical Ministries. Let’s write for Him and about Him together! Be sure to check out Top 7 Bible Verses: Writing for God.
