The Off The Bench "Superstar Award From The Lord" for September 2022 goes to Brother Benjamin "Benji" Tapia! Well done, Brother Benji!
The Cross, Kerrville, Texas
Have you ever visited The Cross in Kerrville, Texas? If you have, you know what a special place it is for all visitors, especially Christians. From the larger-than-life bronze sculpture of Jesus who greets you to the Empty Cross towering 77' 7" above you, there's no doubt that God is here. You are on Holy ground.
God is the ultimate artist. He uses "figure" and "ground" to create His masterpieces for all to enjoy. At The Cross, the "Figures" are God's work through sculptor Max Greiner, Jr., and the "Grounds" are entrusted to Brother Benji and other volunteers.
Brother Benji Tapia, Man of God
Brother Benji, however, isn't your typical groundskeeper. Instead, he is a Man of God who reflects God's character in all he does.
I've seen Brother Benji nearly every time I've visited The Cross. Without exception, he has taken time from his duties to welcome me and speak to me as a man on a mission that transcends his groundskeeping duties.
He is a "Chaplain of the Cross" without the red vest! He is an ON-FIRE BELIEVER who reflects God with honor, dignity, and integrity in all his duties and responsibilities. He even offered me a bottle of cold water on a hot afternoon. It reminded me of Jesus speaking to His disciples...
"Truly, I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in My name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward." Mark 9:41
I believe that our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ is fully aware of Brother Benji and his exemplary work. I pray that Benji hears God's words to him daily:
"Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your Master's happiness!" Matthew 25:21
So the next time (or the first time) you visit The Cross in Kerrville, Texas, and you feel God's presence, look around. You will see Brother Benji ready to welcome you or see him hard at work keeping God's holy grounds beautiful.
Thanks for getting Off the Bench, Brother Benji! We appreciate and recognize the work you do in His service!
