The Lord Looks at The Heart

Updated: Sep 28, 2022

The Texas Hill Country is beautiful in the fall. Unfortunately, we are in the middle of a dry summer right now. The grass is brown and scorched.

As I looked through the images on my phone, I found a vivid reminder of a season I love. I recall taking this photo in 2020...As I came around a bend in the road, I saw this tree ablaze with color. It may not have been a “burning bush,” but the tree spoke to my heart just the same.

This tree was showing God’s glory! It wasn’t putting on an act; it was actualizing God’s intentions for it.

I knew there was a Bible verse that spoke to my experience...which one I had no clue about. Then I found in my next Bible study lesson precisely what I wanted to say...

“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7 NIV)

This tree was not the tallest in the Texas Hill Country...it didn’t even have a diversity of colors as many others. Yet, this tree seemed to have a perfect alignment between it and God. The tree was perfectly reflecting God within it.

Was the “tree” perfect? Unfortunately, no. It had scars on its trunk and lacked ideal symmetry. And yet, it was “perfect” in its reflection of the Creator who created it!

Today, as I was wrapped up in my “fallen leave syndrome,” I missed multiple opportunities to show God my heart...the one I want to have, NOT the one I showed! Have you ever had a similar experience?
