Two Questions About God

Updated: Sep 27, 2022

“Can you discover the depths of God? Can you discover the limits of the Almighty?” Job 11:7-8

It seems that Job was asking these questions of his friends out of frustration. As you know, Job was a man who was having a hard life despite doing all the right things. Fortunately for him, he continued being faithful, and God rewarded him for it.

But if Jesus was with us--right now--asking these questions in a conversation:

1. Can you discover the depths of God?;

2. Can you discover the limits of the Almighty?

How would we respond? Here is my short answer…

The questions seem to address both wisdom and humility. Only a fool would seriously answer “yes” to these questions. How can one discover the depths or limits of something (God) that transcends us?

Humbling ourselves...yes, getting down on our knees to pray for wisdom...is appropriate. In fact,

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7

As we submit to God’s authority, it shows our reverence and establishes the relationship...no longer out of fear but out of love.

“A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel….” Proverbs 1:5

Having responded with respect and humility to Jesus, we can then, “as children” of God, begin to ask questions of the Almighty. After all, His word says,

“Call to me and I will answer you, and tell you great and unsearchable things, which you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:3

How would you respond to these questions? Jesus may be asking!
